Abdallah Akar was born in Tunisia in 1952 He comes to Paris
at the end of the sixties in order to carry on with his studies.
His tastes soon drive him towards plastic arts: He learns drawing
and painting but is finally attracted to calligraphy and his meeting
with Iraqi Master Ghani ALANI will be decisive.
Since 1986, year of his first public exhibition, his work appears
in a number of cultural events such as personal or group exhibitions,
lectures, courses, etc...
Since 1993, he teaches calligraphy at the Arabian World Institute
in Paris.
"L'attrait de la ligne",
Dec. 6th, 1990
"Generally speaking, caligraphy, be it Latin, Arabian or
Chinese, is not meant to be read. It uses the letter for its shape,
its geometry. It plays with light and shade, uses colour, volume
and space. It is an art in its own right"... "In Morocco,
for example, there are calligraphy-deciphering contests. The letter
is codified, measured, it follows a rythm. It is written with
a quill which is beveled to the left for Arabian calligraphy and
dipped into ink. Thus, with the same letters, you can write one
word in different ways."
"A calligrapher composes, does scales: He is like a musician
who, with one note, does not play the same music", Abdallah
Akar explains. For him, "Arabian calligraphy makes a link
between Chinese and Latin calligraphies. The technic is closer
to Latin calligraphy, but the spirit is more Chinese". A
very personal point of view by the Tunisian calligrapher. The
specific feature of this Arabian craft is that it uses an alphabet
like the Latin one, but insists on the line that gets in a tangle,
bends, moves closer, and thus makes one think of Chinese ideographs.
